There was a guy in a suit who walked the whole town with a bag, he would never let it go. A visitor at a cafe saw this young man waking up and down with that bag. Coincidentally the guy after a while came and sat in the same cafe as the visitor did.
The both were unfamiliar to each other's background. The cafe was full so the visitor asked him that he could share his table. The suited guy preferred to stand and wait for a while than to sit on that small table. It was beneath him, we wanted the overpriced reserved one. But as fate had it. It was past half hour. Exhausted by the heat he gave up and asked the visitor if he could allow him to share the table. He accepted with a smile. After a while he asked the visitor ' you don't look for the city.
'Yes I am a traveler. I am just passing by your town'.
‘how did you find the place, I know it's little too expensive, but once you get the perfect job you life is set forever’
The coffee arrived by now. It looked delicious being all covered with chocolate and waffles.
The visitor smiled; well your city is actually very cheap. It is just like this coffee of yours.
All the covering that you see outside the coffee, that is expensive but not the coffee. And as you get carried away by the outer layers you forget that you just wanted to have a coffee at the first place. You never wanted the sugar coating, but because someone priced it above 50$ you think it's different, and the outer layer becomes important to you.
The suited guy was still confused. But he had to show his wittiness so he added, but sir don't you think everything has a price and by the way the coating makes my coffee way better.
The visitor had a big laugh. Annoyed by his behavior, he asked him to explain the reason for his laughter.
‘There you go '. That's the whole thing; there was no reason for my laughter. I just laughed because I felt like. .
Okay first you tell me what's in this bag. You have been carrying it for so long.
Well it has some really important documents of my firm. They are worth a million.
To whom? Added the visitor
Then why are you running around with it. Well my boss was suppose to meet them today, but it got postpone last moment so now I have to take care of them until tomorrow .
‘I thought you had gold in the bag, that’s why you were holding it so close to you.
Well it important to my firm.
But what about you. ?
Your boss was suppose to meet the client , the bag is worth a million but only to the client and yet he cancelled it cause there was another more important million he had to take care of . But you are the one who is taking care of things that are not important to the people it should be. That's why I said your city is actually cheap.
Well so you mean I should just ditch the bag. ? What do you do for a living anyway.
Ha-ha, don't take me so serious hug fellow. I just wanted you to open your bag and fill it with things worth more than a million dollar to you and for what I do, I am a psychiatrist who left his job and became a traveler. Now I travel, find stories and write books. These are my last five novels and when duty calls I go back to helping people.
So what changed you form a psychiatrist to a writer
‘Well that's a long story, my friend.’
Well my cup is still half full.
If you insist , it was eleven years back I was lived in Manhattan , I was just like you ambitious , hard working , I wanted to be the best, be someone people would talk about .well you have to work real hard to survive in that city . One day I got back home and my uncle called he played a huge role in my upbringing as a kid. I mean he really loved me, he would go out of his way to make me smile, but he was wasn't that good a man in real life . He was just different to me. I had heard stories of him drinking too much and stuff but to me he was different. Anyways, he was 73 then and he called me to ask how I was. I left my work and took out time for him, he had started to get the gifts of old age by now. He had some problem with his brain that affect his speech .so we would talk real slow for me to understand his words, we talked about my childhood and in no time, he started to cry. He said he missed me a lot. At that very moment, I just wanted to leave whatever I had and rush to him. Take care of him.
Doesn't he have a family of his own? Interrupted the suited guy
No he got divorced and I heard he has some friend where he lived. But that day I knew he felt alone. It is only when you become dependent on someone you realize what oneness is. So I got done with the call , but I couldn’t sleep the whole night , with this thought, that he valued me so much and I am here in this city running around trying to make a carrier and waiting for offices I don't know even if they would call me . And I just couldn't go to meet him. Cause that would have spoiled my 2 months and after all how long could I have been with him, few days, a month at max . And you won't believe, I dint get any calls from any offices that month, except one.
His friends, they called me to inform that he passed away last night and that he had my photo on his phone cover and there was an envelope next to his drawer, it was my birthday card. In which it was written Happy birthday to you and me :). We shared the same birth dates.
That moment I realized that in this stupid short life. We have made our life like this coffee of yours, sweet and colorful from the outside but inside the real ingredient is sour and not valued. We all believe that we carry this baggage with us ever since our inception , but less we know that it is empty . The only thing that is filled in it is the air of unnecessary Accessories. Something that we would never need and look back on the day we breath our last breath . But yet we hold on to it. I could have taken out time and met him, at max I would have just missed an interview or a job. But I could have given him a lifetime of memory.
Don't let life slip away ask yourself what is more important to you, don't worry about the decisions you take in life, whatever you do, life will balance out itself .
That is the law my friend. And no matter how much you like the outer layer, remember that what you ordered was just a cup of coffee …
